You pause, take a deep breath, and let it out slowly.
Something shifts. You realize you’re stepping into a different space.
The noise in your mind — bills, health worries, work tensions — begins to fade. With each slow, intentional breath, your awareness drops from your head into your body. Muscles unclench. A gentle wave of relaxation moves through you.
As you continue to breathe with intention, your awareness expands. You notice the forest around you. The twisting roots of an old oak grip the earth. A silky dogwood spreads delicate branches into the light. Sunlight filters through maple leaves, scattering shadows and gold that dance across the ground.
The concerns that followed you here dissolve, replaced by a quiet wonder at the beauty of the space you inhabit. You can see it more fully now. You tilt your head up and take in the deep blue sky washed by glorious rays of the sun that light up the white puffy cloud drifting lazily by. A hawk flits by overhead; as your awareness merges with it you feel the intensity of its piercing gaze and powerful talons.
You walk slowly, unhurried. “Hello, grasses. Hello, silky dogwood. Hello, dragonfly,” you whisper, as if greeting old friends. They smile and wave back at you.
The wind stirs your hair. Nearby wildflowers offer a sweet, subtle perfume. Squirrels chitter at each other as they chase one another up a tree, claws scuffling on the bark.
You stop at a massive oak, its gnarled limbs reaching and intertwining skyward. You breathe together — your exhale becoming its inhale, its exhale filling your lungs. You rest your palm on the rough bark. A pulse thrums beneath your hand, a life many years older than your own.
“What message do you have for me today, ancient one?” you ask silently.
You smile as you receive its answer.
